Electronics Certification and Compliance

Electronics is one of the most regulated categories to import, and the paperwork has to be right before the goods ship.

CE (RED, EMC, LVD)

The CE mark covers the EU directives that apply to most electronics: the Radio Equipment Directive for anything with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, plus EMC and Low Voltage rules. We help you confirm a supplier’s test reports actually match your product version, not an older model.

FCC

Required for electronics sold in the United States. Intentional transmitters such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi devices need FCC ID certification, while simpler digital devices follow the SDoC route. Reports should come from an accredited lab and name your exact model number.

RoHS / REACH

RoHS restricts hazardous substances such as lead and cadmium in electrical products sold in the EU, and REACH governs chemicals more broadly. Serious factories test at material level; we collect those reports so your customs broker and retail customers can actually see them.

UL / ETL (North America)

Not always a legal requirement, but many US retailers, marketplaces and insurers expect UL or ETL marks on chargers, power supplies and anything that plugs into the wall. Certified power products cost more, so we help you decide where the mark is genuinely needed.

UN38.3 and MSDS for batteries

Any product containing a lithium battery needs UN38.3 transport test reports and an MSDS before carriers will accept it, by air or by sea. We verify these documents exist and match the cell actually used in production, because quietly substituted cells are a common and dangerous shortcut.

Electronics MOQ: What to Expect

For standard electronics already in production, MOQs commonly start around 500 to 1,000 units, because factories plan component purchasing and line time in batches. Anything custom raises the floor: a new plastic housing means tooling, custom firmware means engineering hours, and unusual components mean the factory must meet its own suppliers’ minimums. There are honest ways to bring the number down. Use an existing housing with your logo and colours, accept standard packaging, or pay a slightly higher unit price on a first order while the relationship is new. What rarely works is pushing a factory far below its component economics; the quotes that agree too easily are usually the ones to treat with caution.

Quality Control for Electronics

Electronics fails in ways a photo cannot show, so our checks are functional. During production we look at solder quality, verify components against the approved bill of materials, and check that the factory is genuinely running aging tests rather than just claiming to. At pre-shipment inspection we power devices on, test charging and every port, pair Bluetooth and Wi-Fi where relevant, measure battery capacity against the spec, and confirm the right firmware, manuals and accessories are in the box. We inspect to an agreed AQL sampling standard and keep a golden sample from your approved batch. Electronics is dense, high-value cargo, so both sea and air freight can make sense; the deciding factors are usually batteries and cash flow. Lithium batteries are classed as dangerous goods: shipments need UN38.3 reports and an MSDS, air options are restricted, and some forwarders refuse battery cargo outright, so we book with carriers who handle it routinely. Packing matters more than most buyers expect: ESD bags for bare boards, moisture protection through the humid summer months, and drop-tested export cartons, because a crushed retail box can turn sellable goods into returns. How do I verify an electronics supplier in China?

Start with the business licence: it shows the registered company name, scope and address, which you can cross-check against official records. Then establish whether you are talking to the factory or a trading company; both can be legitimate, but you should know which one is quoting. For electronics we go further: we visit the site, look at the SMT lines and test stations, ask what they build for other export markets, and check that certificates were issued for their company and product, not borrowed. A paid sample tested against your spec settles more arguments than any amount of chat.

What certifications do I need to import electronics from China?

It depends on your market and the product. For the EU, most electronics need CE marking covering EMC and Low Voltage, plus the Radio Equipment Directive if there is any Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and RoHS on substances. The US side runs on FCC rules, with UL or ETL expected for anything mains-powered by many retailers. Often yes, but under strict conditions. Batteries packed with or contained in equipment can move by air under IATA rules with limits on the state of charge and packaging, while standalone lithium batteries face tighter restrictions on passenger aircraft. Every shipment needs a UN38.3 test summary and an MSDS, and carriers can refuse cargo that lacks them. Some products, configurations or battery sizes make air impractical, in which case sea freight under dangerous goods procedures is the workable route. We check the battery documents before booking so shipments are not stopped at the airline’s desk.

How long does electronics production take in China?

For a branded version of an existing product, factories commonly quote around 30 to 45 days from deposit and approved sample, driven mostly by component lead times. Custom products take longer: tooling alone often runs several weeks before the first trial shots, and firmware debugging adds time that is hard to predict. Chinese New Year and other holidays can push everything out, since lines stop and workers travel.
