Buying a machine is not like buying a container of goods. You are buying steel, motors, electrics, software and a promise of support that has to hold up for years. China builds capable equipment at prices that change the economics of a factory or workshop, but the gap between a serious machine builder and a trading company reselling someone else’s build is hard to see from a catalogue. We have been on the ground in Guangzhou since 2007, and machinery is where that presence earns its keep.
The workshops that matter are spread across Jiangsu, Shandong, Zhejiang and Guangdong, and each region leans a different way. A buyer searching for machinery manufacturers in China usually finds the companies with the best export sales teams, not necessarily the best fabrication shops. We visit the works, watch the machine run with your material, and check who actually machined the frame before you commit a deposit.
Just as important is what happens after the wire transfer. Wiring diagrams, PLC access, spare parts, English manuals, installation support: these are negotiated before the contract, not begged for afterwards. When you import machinery from China through us, those terms are written down while you still have leverage.
Machine building in China is regional, and knowing which province leans toward which equipment saves weeks of dead-end enquiries.

Machinery is one of the most heavily regulated import categories, and the paperwork has to be right before the machine ships, not after it clears customs.
Machines placed on the EU market need CE marking with a Declaration of Conformity and a technical file covering risk assessment. Many Chinese builders offer a certificate from an unaccredited body; we help you check what sits behind the paper and arrange proper assessment where the market requires it.
Domestic-market Chinese machines frequently ship with less guarding than EU or UK rules expect: open nip points, missing interlocks, minimal e-stop coverage. Guarding, light curtains and interlocked doors can usually be specified at build stage cheaply; retrofitting them at destination is expensive. We write guarding into the order.
Wiring for your country’s voltage and frequency, labelled panels, schematics in English and recognised component brands inside the cabinet all need agreeing up front. A machine wired for 380V 50Hz three-phase will not simply plug in everywhere, and rewiring a control cabinet after delivery is miserable work.
The UK, along with markets such as Australia and parts of the Middle East, applies its own conformity rules that broadly mirror but do not copy the EU regime. We flag the destination market to the builder at quotation stage so declarations, plates and manuals match where the machine will actually run.
A usable English operation manual, maintenance schedule, lubrication chart and electrical drawings should be a contract deliverable. Regulators can ask for them, your insurer may ask for them, and your maintenance team certainly will. We collect and review the pack before final payment.
Machinery is the one category where MOQ rarely means quantity: most builders will happily sell a single machine. The real thresholds are elsewhere. Standard catalogue machines can often ship from stock or within weeks, while custom builds are quoted per project with a deposit, typically a meaningful percentage up front, the balance due at factory acceptance. Customisation is where leverage lives: changing feeders, moulds, formats or voltage is straightforward on a machine not yet built and painful on one that is. Multi-machine lines are usually negotiated as a package, and buying the spare parts kit with the machine is nearly always cheaper than ordering parts urgently later. We structure the payment schedule around inspection milestones, so money moves when the machine demonstrably works.
A machine can look immaculate and still be wrong. The check that matters is the factory acceptance test: the machine running your actual material or product at rated speed, for long enough to show up feeding problems, jams, overheating and output quality. We attend FATs in person, record the run, measure output against the quoted specification and open the electrical cabinet to verify the component brands quoted are the brands fitted. Before shipment we come back to check crating, rust protection, oil drainage and that loose parts, tooling and manuals are packed and listed. Inspection reduces risk substantially; it does not remove it, which is why we also insist on documented warranty terms and a spare parts list before the balance is paid.
Machinery freight is a weight and dimensions game. Smaller machines travel crated in standard containers, and the crate itself matters: ISPM 15 heat-treated timber, bolted to the container floor, with the machine braced against its own mass shifting at sea. Larger equipment goes into open-top or flat-rack containers as out-of-gauge cargo, which is priced case by case and needs lifting drawings and centre-of-gravity marks. Port handling, crane hire at destination and inland delivery on a suitable truck all belong in your landed cost from the start. Some ancillaries, such as lithium-battery backups or certain oils, bring dangerous-goods rules with them. Sea freight is the default; air only ever makes sense for urgent spare parts.
Most machinery buyers run the whole project remotely. You send the specification, samples of your material or product, and the target output. We shortlist genuine builders, sit in on technical calls as your interpreter and your sceptic, and get competing quotations onto one comparison sheet so the differences are real, not cosmetic. During the build we send dated photo and video updates, then attend the factory acceptance test on your behalf and stream it live if you want to watch your machine run before releasing payment. After shipment we stay the channel for spare parts and warranty claims, because a builder answers faster in Chinese, in person.
For a significant machine purchase, flying in is often worth it, and we make the trip count. We collect you in Guangzhou or meet you at the cluster: Ruian for packaging lines, Jinan for laser and CNC, Ningbo for injection machines. Two or three factory visits a day, with us translating the engineering conversation, not just the pleasantries, and steering you away from showroom-only outfits. You watch your material run on the actual machine before you commit. When you fly home, we remain your representative in China, handling the FAT, pre-shipment inspection, documentation and the after-sales relationship in your name.
The honest answer is that the spread is wide. The better builders in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Guangdong produce equipment that runs for years in factories worldwide, often fitted with Japanese or European motors, drives and PLCs on request. The weaker end cuts cost on steel thickness, bearings and cabinet components in ways you cannot see in photos. Reliability is mostly decided before you order: choosing a real manufacturer, specifying component brands in the contract, and running a proper acceptance test with your material. That is exactly the part of the process we manage.
Plan for it at purchase, not after the first breakdown. We negotiate a recommended spares kit shipped inside the machine crate, wear-parts drawings so common items can be sourced locally, and remote support terms including PLC access codes, which some builders withhold by default. Video-call troubleshooting with the builder’s engineers resolves a surprising share of problems, and we translate those calls when needed. For major interventions, builders can send engineers abroad at your cost, or we help arrange a local technician working from the factory’s documentation.
Most export-oriented builders will offer CE, but the substance varies enormously. Some hold genuine assessments with a proper technical file; others buy a certificate from an unaccredited body that will not survive scrutiny from a market-surveillance authority or an insurer. If you are placing the machine on the EU or UK market, the responsibility lands on you as importer, so the paperwork has to be real. Yes, and for complex lines you should insist on it. Typical arrangements are either factory engineers travelling to your site, with you covering flights, accommodation and a day rate, or your technicians training at the factory during the acceptance test, which we often recommend because problems surface while the builder’s whole team is on hand. Visa lead times for travelling engineers can be significant, so the installation plan belongs in the contract. We write installation, training days and commissioning criteria into the order terms up front.
Standard catalogue machines can ship from stock or within a few weeks. Custom builds commonly run from around two to six months depending on complexity, plus sea freight, customs and installation at your end. The schedule risks are usually changes requested mid-build and slow buyer feedback on drawings, so we push the builder for a milestone schedule at contract stage and chase it with dated photo updates. We never promise clearance or delivery dates on the builder’s behalf, but we do make delays visible early, while there is still time to react.
Trading companies play a legitimate role, especially when a line combines equipment from several builders, and some offer genuinely useful engineering coordination. The problems come when a reseller presents someone else’s workshop as their own, because support, spare parts and warranty claims then run through a middle layer that may not exist in three years. We verify who actually builds the machine, visit that workshop, and make sure the contract, the nameplate and the after-sales commitment all point at a company that can honour them.
