Product Packaging and Design Services in China

Why Packaging Matters

Product packaging is far more than a protective shell — it is your brand's first physical touchpoint with the customer, a key factor in purchasing decisions, and a critical element in product protection during shipping and storage. China offers some of the world's most cost-effective packaging manufacturing, with capabilities ranging from simple poly bags to premium custom boxes with advanced printing and finishing techniques.

Types of Product Packaging Available in China

Corrugated Boxes and Cartons

The most common packaging type for consumer products. China's corrugated packaging industry produces everything from plain brown shipping cartons to full-color printed retail boxes. Options include single-wall, double-wall, and triple-wall corrugated board in various flute sizes. Custom die-cut shapes, window cutouts, and structural inserts are all available at competitive prices.

Rigid Boxes

Premium packaging used for electronics, cosmetics, jewelry, and luxury goods. Rigid boxes are constructed from thick chipboard wrapped with printed paper or specialty materials. They create a premium unboxing experience and are ideal for products where packaging presentation directly influences perceived value. Costs are higher than folding cartons but significantly lower than equivalent packaging from Western manufacturers.

Flexible Packaging

Pouches, bags, sachets, and wraps made from plastic films, foil, or paper. Used extensively for food products, cosmetics, and small consumer goods. China's flexible packaging industry offers advanced barrier technologies, resealable closures, shaped pouches, and multi-layer laminations.

Blister Packs and Clamshells

Thermoformed plastic packaging commonly used for hardware, electronics accessories, toys, and retail display. These packages combine a clear plastic shell with a printed card backer, allowing customers to see the product while providing hanging display capability and tamper evidence.

Design Services Available in China

Many Chinese packaging manufacturers offer in-house design services at low cost or free of charge for production orders. Services typically include structural design and die-line creation, graphic design and artwork adaptation, 3D rendering and mockup visualization, material selection consultation, and print-ready file preparation. While these services can be cost-effective, providing your own professionally designed artwork generally produces better results, especially for brand-critical packaging.

Printing Methods

  • Offset lithography: The standard for high-quality, full-color printing on paper and cardboard. Excellent color accuracy and consistency. Cost-effective for runs above 1,000 units.
  • Digital printing: Best for short runs (under 1,000 units) and variable data. Lower setup costs but higher per-unit costs than offset for larger quantities.
  • Flexographic printing: Commonly used for corrugated boxes and flexible packaging. Good for simple designs with fewer colors.
  • Screen printing: Used for printing on irregular surfaces, glass, and specialty materials. Produces vibrant, thick ink deposits.

Finishing Techniques

Chinese packaging manufacturers offer a wide range of finishing options to enhance your packaging:

  • Lamination: Matte or gloss film applied over printed surfaces for protection and appearance.
  • Spot UV coating: Glossy coating applied to specific areas for visual contrast against a matte background.
  • Foil stamping: Metallic foil pressed onto the packaging for logos or decorative elements. Available in gold, silver, and custom colors.
  • Embossing and debossing: Raised or recessed textures that add tactile dimension to logos and text.
  • Die cutting: Custom-shaped packaging or window cutouts.

Packaging MOQs and Costs

Packaging MOQs in China vary by type and complexity. Simple folding cartons typically start at 1,000-3,000 units. Rigid boxes may start at 500-1,000 units. Flexible packaging usually requires 5,000-10,000 units minimum due to film roll minimums. Custom molds for blister packs add $500-$2,000 in tooling costs. Per-unit packaging costs are highly dependent on materials, size, printing complexity, and finishing techniques, but are generally 40-60% lower than equivalent packaging from Western manufacturers.

Quality Control for Packaging

Include packaging in your quality control inspections. Check print color accuracy against approved proofs, structural integrity and fold quality, label placement and barcode scannability, material quality and thickness, and packaging functionality (does it protect the product adequately during shipping?). Request a printed proof or pilot run sample before approving full production to catch color and registration issues early.

Coordinating Packaging with Product Manufacturing

Ideally, your packaging should be produced and delivered to your product factory in time for the packing stage of production. Coordinate timelines between your packaging supplier and product manufacturer. Many product factories have relationships with nearby packaging suppliers and can manage this coordination on your behalf.
