Amazon FBA Sourcing from China: Complete Guide

Why China Sourcing Powers Amazon FBA Success

The majority of successful Amazon FBA sellers source their products from China. The combination of low manufacturing costs, vast product variety, and established export infrastructure makes China the logical sourcing destination for Amazon sellers seeking competitive pricing and healthy margins. However, FBA sourcing has specific requirements that go beyond general China importing.

Product Selection for Amazon FBA

Criteria for Winning FBA Products

Not every product from China works well on Amazon FBA. Look for products that meet these criteria:

  • Small and lightweight: FBA fees are heavily influenced by product size and weight. Items under 2 pounds that fit in standard-size packaging incur significantly lower fees.
  • Durable for shipping: Products must survive multiple handling stages — factory to port, ocean freight, Amazon warehouse, and final delivery. Fragile items generate high damage rates and returns.
  • Not dominated by major brands: Categories with strong brand loyalty (like smartphones or athletic shoes) are nearly impossible to compete in. Target categories where customers choose based on features and reviews rather than brand name.
  • Steady year-round demand: Avoid highly seasonal products unless you have the cash flow and storage capacity to manage inventory cycles.
  • Room for differentiation: Can you improve the product, bundle accessories, or target a specific niche better than existing listings?

Finding FBA-Ready Suppliers

Your Chinese supplier needs to understand and meet Amazon's specific requirements. When evaluating suppliers, verify that they have experience supplying Amazon FBA sellers, can produce Amazon-compliant packaging and labeling, are willing to apply FNSKU labels to individual units, can pack goods according to Amazon carton requirements, and have the ability to ship directly to Amazon fulfillment centers or to your freight forwarder.

Amazon-Specific Packaging and Labeling

FNSKU Labels

Every unit shipped to Amazon FBA must have an FNSKU (Fulfillment Network Stock Keeping Unit) barcode label. You can either have your supplier apply these labels during packing (preferred for efficiency) or have them applied by your freight forwarder or prep service. Ensure labels are printed clearly, sized correctly, and placed according to Amazon's guidelines.

Packaging Requirements

Amazon has strict packaging requirements that vary by product category. Products sold as sets must be clearly labeled "Sold as Set — Do Not Separate." Poly-bagged products must include a suffocation warning. Sharp items must be appropriately packaged. Products with expiration dates must be clearly labeled. Discuss all applicable requirements with your supplier and provide written instructions with examples.

Shipping to Amazon FBA Warehouses

Direct Shipping from China to Amazon

Many sellers ship directly from China to Amazon fulfillment centers. This saves the cost and time of receiving goods at your own warehouse first. Your freight forwarder handles customs clearance, import duties, and delivery to Amazon's designated receiving center. However, you lose the opportunity to inspect goods yourself before they enter Amazon's system — making pre-shipment inspections in China even more critical.

Using a Prep Center

An alternative is to ship goods to a US-based (or market-based) prep center that receives your inventory, conducts a final quality check, applies FNSKU labels if needed, repackages if necessary, and forwards goods to Amazon. Prep centers add cost but provide an extra quality checkpoint and flexibility.

Quality Control for FBA Products

Amazon's customer-centric marketplace makes quality control especially important. High defect rates lead to negative reviews that tank your listing's ranking, increased return rates that eat into margins, potential listing suppression or account suspension, and A-to-Z claims that damage your seller metrics. Invest in thorough pre-shipment inspections for every FBA order, with particular attention to functionality, appearance consistency, and packaging integrity.

Product Compliance for Amazon

Amazon requires products to comply with all applicable regulations in the destination market. This means CE/FCC/UL certifications where required, CPSIA compliance for children's products, FDA compliance for food-contact and health-related items, and proper material safety documentation. Non-compliant products can be seized at customs, rejected by Amazon, or lead to account suspension.

Calculating FBA Profitability

FBA profitability requires accounting for more costs than standard importing. Your calculation must include product cost (FOB), shipping to Amazon (sea or air freight), customs duties and import taxes, Amazon referral fee (typically 15%), FBA fulfillment fee (based on size and weight), FBA storage fees (monthly and long-term), advertising costs (PPC), returns and refund costs, and product photography and listing optimization costs. A product is typically viable for FBA if you can achieve a minimum 30% net margin after all costs.
